Marine Mom
drawing - color pencil on paper
36″ × 48″
On one of the many online bulletin boards dedicated to women in the services, a master gunnery sergeant in the Marines tells this story: Her daughter’s teacher, in discussing the various branches of the service, informed the class that women were not permitted to enlist in the Marines as they were deemed too weak. To her surprise, her daughter did not feel it appropriate to contradict her teacher’s inaccuracy. Instead, she felt her mother’s example would be more indisputably made in person and invited her to come to school the following day in her dress blues to set the teacher straight.
